In 2021 we introduced a new variety Sunsation. An spectaculaire bi-color exclusively grown by de Boer Hortensia. Before we growed the bi-color Sunrise, however we replaced this variety for Sunsation, which is an mutation of Sunrise. Sunsation has an higher level of white tones in the flower. Where sunrise was mainly pink with a small touch of white, Sunsation has roughly 50% white and 50% pink of purple in the flower.
We have seen an positive market introduction, however the purple/white colour is embraced better than pink/white. Therefore for 2022 we scaled up the purple/white Sunsation. For 2022 we expect to harvest 25.000 Sunsation pink/white and 75.000 Sunsation purple/white. In 2021 we have seen the integrated pest managment in this variety went supurb against insects. For powerdy mildew we had big issues to fight this disease. In the spring of 2022 we made changes to the greenhouse to start with sulfur to fight the powerdy mildew. For 2022 we intent to grow the Sunsation variety with almost zero chemicals. Also we intent to use as little of only 1 M3 gas for every 20 harvested Sunsation hydrangea’s. that is only 90 gram of CO2 emission for every Sunsation. To compare: an everage sized car has an co2 emission of 100 gram/km.
